kitchen fire - fire simulation in second life

Simulations of processes and events have the advantage that they can be used safely, more cost-effective than real exercise, and they can be repeated as much as needed. There exists special computer software to perform computer simulations, but this software needs to be purchased (often for a lot of money) and must be deployed to the audience.

Virtual worlds have evolved considerably in recent years. The realistic 3D representation has witnessed a quantum leap, not least thanks to the tremendous performance of the popular hardware in PCs nowadays. The integrated programming features of virtual worlds make an implementation of simulations attractive in these environments.

kitchen fire - fire simulation in second life

Swiss Projects has created a simulation of a kitchen fire within the virtual world Second Life. Here, the visitor experiences with his avatar in an almost real, three-dimensional environment, how a fire can develop, originated from an overheated fryer, and how it should be fought.

scenario

The visitor enters with his avatar a kitchen, where he is first brought closer to the environment via a Introducere history. Suddenly he sees smoke of a fryer on the cooking island, which gets burning soon. How will he behave now?

  • Use the fire blanket which hangs on the wall?
  • Use a fire extinguisher. But where is her?
  • Pouring a bucket of water on the flames?
  • First alarm or the fire department. Which is the correct phone number?
  • Leaving the room?
  • Unplug the fryer
  • And in which order shall he do this?

If he is not acting, or doing the wrong action, so it happens within a short time to a total fire of the whole kitchen. Should he even use water, he experiences a tremendous explosion of flames, making the whole kitchen on fire. Happily, after a few minutes the fire brigade hurries for help, and extinguishes the fire. Depending on the action he can stop the scenario immediately, or he sees and hears in the most impressive manner, as the fire spreads, how the kitchen gets colored black from the thick dark smoke, and how everything is charred and destroyed.

visit this simulation

The simulation is publicly and freely accessible for everyone. In order to be able to visit them, a Second Life account is required. This can be opened for free. How, is described here.

The Kitchen Fire simulation is located on the region BlackStar City, where you can teleport with the following SLURL.

implementation

The simulation is controlled by five central control units that regulate over 100 devices. These devices produce smoke, flames, particles, flames, animations, sounds, color changes, facility changes, and accept user interaction. Using our specially created simulation programming language, we can stear each control unit, which then performs the action of each device. Using the parallel processing feature of this simulation language, we can take a very rapid and precise control over sequences of events. The implemented simulation shows that the technical capabilities and the performance of the Second Life platform is ideally suited for the implementation of sophisticated simulations.

extended applicability

This simulation can be extended with further actions and for other possible applications. For example, a ranking system of the correct user actions may be installed, or the avatar might animated, i.e when he is suspended to too many heat or smog. Also, the simulation could control a larger building, like in a major fire.

Furthermore, in a similar situation, the fire and rescue brigade could be trained in such a simulation environment. There, the correct behavior would be trained as a team, and an instructor could monitor the actions.
